Emirates Airlines’ non stop 14 hours flight to JFK Airport in New York was the first in-service revenue flight for GP7200 engines. Jim Moravecek, President of Engine Alliance, hailed the flight as a landmark achievement for Engine Alliance, Airbus and Emirates. He also expressed his pleasure over the fact that world’s biggest A380 fleet will now be powered by GP7200 engine.
Moravecek has claimed that this flight highlights the successful alliance of Pratt & Whitney and GE Aviations. He articulated the desire to work intimately with Emirates for smooth operations. Engine Alliance is equal-share joint venture of GE Aviation and United technologies Corp through its division Pratt & Whitney.
GP7200 fitted A380s have received certification from ‘Federal Aviation Administration’ and ‘European Aviation Safety Agency’. Engine Alliance GP7200 has also entered into agreements with Korean Airlines, International Lease Finance Company and Air France. GP7200 has been touted as quietest and most fuel-efficient engine for A380s.
GP7200 is the amalgam of two prominent wide-body engine series viz. PW4000 and GE90. Manufacturing operations are divided between GE and Pratt & Whitney. Pratt & Whitney is responsible for manufacturing low pressure compressors, low pressure turbines and fan modules, whereas GE aviation will be responsible for assembling the core. Ultimate engine assembly is done at the Pratt & Whitney’s Engine Center in Middletown, Connecticut. Engine alliance is currently putting emphasis on dynamic sales drives with prospective clients around the globe.
