In an effort to cut rising costs and battle post-recession woes, one of UK’s most prominent budget airline, Easyjet, has announced new cuts that will be made to its services. Easyjet has recently announced that it will stop operations at one airport and further reduce its capacity by at least 20 percent.

After a long 90 day consultation with its staff, Easyjet has decided to close its base at East Midlands Airport. Also decided was to reduce capacity by at least 20 percent at its home base in London’s Luton Airport. The airline has announced that all operation in East Midlands Airport will cease on the fifth of January.

The crew based in East Midlands which included 107 pilots and cabin crew will be transferred to other Easyjet bases around UK. Any passenger who has a flight booked after 5th January from the East Midlands Airport will be emailed by the airline. They will be offered a full refund or a free transfer to any other Easyjet flight or a free transfer to a Bmibaby flight.

Easyjet plans to reduce capacity by 20 percent at its home base in London Luton Airport. It believes that airport operator Abertis and Luton Borough council failed to understand the impact recession had on the airline industry and did not keep its costs in check accordingly. This has led the airport to lose its competitive spirit. Taking all this on to consideration, Easyjet has decided to move its business.

Easyjet has now decided to move to more profitable airports. Over the medium term, the airline intends to make an overall profit of 7.5 percent per year.
