EasyJet named best low cost airline
Posted on: August 14th, 2008 by Emily WelchSkytrax has announced that easyJet is this year’s winner of the award for the best low cost carrier in the world and Singapore Airlines has taken the honours as the overall best airline globally, in its World Airline Awards that are voted on each year.
The awards are based on the votes of more than 15 million passengers involved in a survey conducted over 11 months by Skytrax, the operator of the Airline Star Ranking and the Quality Certified Airline programmes.
The CEO of Skytrax, Edward Plaisted, commented on easyJet’s award, saying: “As we have stated in earlier years, low-cost does not need to, nor should it equate to, low-quality service, and easyJet is clear testament that low-cost operations can be delivered with a good standard of customer care and passenger service quality - with their level of customer loyalty clearly demonstrating a winning formula”.
The low cost top 10 did not feature any other UK-based carriers. Other airlines that did place in the top 10 included Virgin Blue, in second place, Jetstar Airways in third, Air Berlin taking fourth place, and Southwest Airlines coming in fifth. The best low cost European carrier category had Air Berlin placing second behind easyJet, with SkyEurope taking third place.
In addition to winning the award for the world’s best airline, Singapore Airlines came in first in the best business class category as well. Cathay Pacific was ranked as the second-best airline in the world, and came in as number one in the first class category. Qantas came third, and was followed by Thai Airways and then Asiana Airlines. No airline based in the UK placed in the top 10.
