EA Warns Homeowners about Flooding After Heavy Rains
Posted on: November 16th, 2009 by Jamie BarnettOver the weekend the UK was the recipient of unusually heavy rains which left the country slightly storm battered in the aftermath. The Environment Agency announced that tidal flooding, however, was less serious that previously thought, and that only a total of 50 residences had been badly affected.
Winds reached up to 70mph, and gusts nearly 100mph. The harsh, gusty rain was accompanied by series of lightning storms, and ferries across the Channel were frequently cancelled to avoid the rough seas. Most affected by ferry cancelations were Plymouth, Dover, and Poole.
A total of 60 homes overall were damaged by a tornado which accompanied the storm when it hit Benfleet in Essex two days ago. Despite saying that damages was less than anticipated, the EA also encouraged homeowners to remain wary as more storms are expected to follow.
A spokesperson for the EA said that the organization was continuing to monitor storm patterns including sea and river levels for flooding. Several areas have become waterlogged and rivers are surging after the heavy rains over the weekend.
The EA has set up a feature on their website to allow people to check flood levels in order to better prepare their homes for flash flooding. Frances Wilson, the popular Sky News weather presenter, has already said that rains will continue to be heavy all next week.
