A holiday flight to Portugal was delayed by over six hours on Sunday when a female cabin crew member turned up drunk and had to be arrested.

Nearly 140 passengers were forced to wait at the Aberdeen Airport for the flight that was to take them to Faro, in Portugal.

The BMI flight was scheduled to depart at 9:00 am, but sources reported that other members of the cabin crew were concerned when they noticed that their 24-year-old seemed to have had too much to drink.

Police from Grampian arrived at the scene and breathalysed the cabin attendant, who was believed to be English. When she failed the test, the officers arrested her.

It took until mid-afternoon before the airline could find another crew member for the flight and Holidaymakers had to wait until 3:30 pm before the Airbus A320 took off.

A report of the incident will be sent to Aberdeen’s procurator fiscal.

A law enforcement spokesman said: “Grampian Police can confirm that they responded to information from staff at Aberdeen Airport and, as a result, a 24-year-old female was subsequently arrested.”

Officials from the Aberdeen Airport commented on the incident: “The airport was made aware of an issue with a member of the cabin crew and the police were alerted. It was unfortunate that passengers were subjected to a lengthy delay.”

BMI also responded to the situation, saying: “We can confirm that a member of the cabin crew was arrested and that we are co-operating fully with the police investigation.”
