Disney Workers’ Dress Code Changed
Posted on: June 21st, 2010 by Neill ZerkIn a huge fashion shake-up, Disney World has decided to change their dress code, allowing female employees to forget pantyhose when wearing skirts, wear tank tops with straps that are at least three inches wide, wear capri pants, as well as wear open-toed shoes. Meanwhile, the change for men is allowing them to wear casual shirts untucked.
The big deal about this is that Disney World has demanded the same clean, all-American appearance of their employees since Walt Disney himself was alive. How employees look on the job matters a lot to Disney World, as well as all other Disney parks, as Walt Disney wanted his employees to look friendly and approachable to guests without being a distraction from the fantasy world he created.
The last time there was a change to the dress code, in 2000, men were allowed to wear cornrows in their hair. These new changes were only made after the company studied similar guidelines at other theme parks.
Walt Disney Entertainment director of creative costuming and cosmetology Vinny Pagliuca says that there are expectations from guests of what they will see on the cast members. There’s still an expectation of a clean look, he added.
A very unpopular fashion rule with the company’s nearly 58,000 workers has been that women have to wear pantyhose if they wear a skirt – no matter how hot it is in the summer. The decision to get rid of this rule applies to most employees, except for in cases where the pantyhose are part of a costume. The other changes apply only to professional staff that don’t wear costumes.
