The world’s largest air carrier, Delta Air Lines, announced on Wednesday that it will charge passengers $15 for their first checked bag, making the airline the last of the six legacy carriers to introduce a first bag fee.

In the same announcement, the airline said it would be cutting other fees, in an alignment with the policies of Northwest Airlines, which it recently acquired.

The Atlanta-based airline giant added that for all flights beginning on December 5, customers flying on the carrier’s domestic services will be charged $15 for their first checked bag and $25 for a second checked bag. This policy is consistent with existing Northwest Airlines regulations regarding checked baggage.

Passengers who purchased tickets on Delta flights before November 5, for travel beginning December 5, will be charged $50 for their second checked bag, but will not be charged for the first checked bag, which is in line with Delta’s previous checked baggage policy.

The carrier’s customers flying in business or first class, as well as SkyMiles Medallion members and members of the WorldPerks Elite program, will be permitted to checked three bags, each weighing a maximum of 70 pounds, at no charge, the airline noted.
