Delta Air Lines will be launching new daily nonstop service from its hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Mumbai, India, beginning November 1.

The carrier has recently acquired Boeing 777-200 long-range jets that make this 17 hour, 55 minute nonstop flight possible. Currently the longest range commercial jetliner in the world, the 777-200LR bolsters Delta’s capability of connecting customers and cargo with most any two airports in the world with nonstop service.

The first two 777-200LRs were added to Delta’s fleet early in 2008, and an additional eight will be delivered over the next two years. Since April, the two new jets have been flying the JFK-Mumbai route, a service that will be discontinued when the new nonstop service between Atlanta and Mumbai commences.

“The size and scope of Delta’s operations at our Atlanta hub are best suited for the capacity of the 777-200LR in terms of cargo and passenger lift,” said Delta’s executive vice president of network and revenue management, Glen Hauenstein. “Serving Mumbai from Atlanta will allow us to optimize the route thanks to the approximately 150 U.S. destinations to which Mumbai customers will be able to connect, as well as the more than 30 easy connections available to and from Latin America and the Caribbean.”

With the new Mumbai service, Delta’s range of nonstop services expands to 78 global destinations from Atlanta, including recent additions such as Shanghai, London’s Heathrow, Stockholm, and Kuwait City.
