Dead body found in landing gear of Delta
Posted on: February 9th, 2010 by Dave HumphriesA Delta Airlines airplane is now being inspected at the runway of Narita Airport outside on Sunday after a lifeless body was earlier found in the landing gear. Japanese authorities were requesting for American help to recognize the body found in one of the plane’s compartment.
A mechanic made the discovery after Flight 59 landed at Narita Airport about 18:05. The victim was a black man dressed in a checker, long-sleeved shirt and jeans.
The body, found at the landing gear’s storage compartment has no visible wounds except signs of frostbite. Officials said that the temperature in that section of the aircraft drops to 58 degrees below zero while on air. Doctors further said that the man most likely froze to death and suffered lack of oxygen at an altitude of about 30,000ft.
Japanese investigators found no passport, bag or even personal belongings to help identify the body. The presumed that his luggage must have fell out in the sea when the Flight 59 opened up the hatch of its landing gear before the aircraft landed.
Police are currently investigating the incident. Japan is seeking assistance from US authorities to help identify him.
There had been cases before that were similar to this month’s happening. In 2003, a dead man was discovered at the landing gear’s storage compartment of an airplane originating from Hong Kong that landed in Narita Airport. Four years later, another man was spotted dead in the nose gear wheel of a United Airlines Boeing 747 jet that arrived in San Francisco Airport from Shanghai.
