Current economic and environmental conditions are causing concerns for US ski resorts
Posted on: September 6th, 2008 by Andrew MayerUS ski resorts are already beginning to worry that this winter could be the worst they have seen in years. Air travel expense has grown too expensive for many people. The weather this winter is expected to be fairly mild. The general state of the economy does not appear to be picking up any time soon. Several factors are emerging that could make this year a quiet season on the slopes.
It is speculated that instead of traveling to major ski resorts in the mountains of Colorado and Utah may vacationers will find a place closer to home instead. The length of the trip can be shortened to cut costs and travel expenses will likely be much less for the vacationer as well.
A research analyst with Rochdale Research, Hayley Wolff, noted that “The concerns this year may center on the higher cost of air travel, the nickel-and-diming by the airlines.” In terms of nickel-and-diming a person heading towards a ski resort will likely carry a substantial amount of gear with them. The added surcharges for checked baggage could potentially have a dramatic affect on the cost of the airline ticket.
The chief executive officer of Vail Resorts Inc., Rob Katz, said “There is no question that the environment today from every front does not feel as robust as it felt last year. At the same time, we’re certainly seeing and hearing that people still want to take vacations.”
