Cold Temperatures Persist into New Year
Posted on: December 28th, 2009 by Dave HumphriesThe UK is still experiencing extremely cold weather which is looking as though it will remain through the New Year. The 2010 year could kick off with a cold front as temperatures are looking as though they will plunge on New Year’s Eve, Thursday throughout most of Britain and Wales.
Forecasters are saying that sub-zero temperatures as low as minus 3C for England and Wales and minus 8C for Scotland will remain steady into New Year’s Eve and possible New Year’s day. A fresh batch of snow showers is expected as well as temperatures drop once again.
The current conditions have been gripping the UK for over a week now with snow, ice, and sleet. Glasgow Airport has already once experienced closures due to snow covered runways shutting down operations for over an hour.
The Met Office has been prompted to caution drivers planning on travelling this week and issued severe weather warnings for upper England and central and south Scotland. Most of southern Scotland will be affected with icy patches in the wake of the drop in temperatures.
Last Friday marked the first white Christmas for the UK in some time, but the last week has caused numerous flight cancellations, road closures, and the Eurostar fiasco as the cold weather persists. The weather even caused many bookies to lose out on the popular British tradition of waging on white Christmas odds. William Hill received 27,000 bets, a new record, and almost 15,000 of which had been placed in London alone. But it was Aberdeen who saw the first snow.
