London and several Home Counties received up to 10 inches of snowfall over night and a forecasted six inches is expected to fall during the course of today. The latest snowfall has only worsened the conditions left by the most recent blizzards from Tuesday.

Army personnel stationed in Hampshire had to be called out to aid over 1,000 stranded drivers after a 10 mile traffic block on the A3(M). The block was caused when an elderly man lost control of his car on an icy patch in the road.

Millions will be missing work and school as the snow begins to shut down businesses and schools across the country. Hundreds of schools shut down and the estimated total cost of loss and aid is expected to reach £2 billion.

Currently all flights out of Luton, Southampton, Gatwick, Bristol and Birmingham have been suspended causing further delays at Heathrow, Manchester, and Cardiff, which are attempting to pick up some of the slack from the closed airports.

The Met Office reported that this winter’s cold snap is the coldest since 1981. Transport including bus, trains, and roads have been shut down or heavily delayed. Schools across the country have been closed with 188 closures in Manchester alone.

Some areas have seen temperatures of -14C. The drop occurred almost overnight leaving motorists stranded on highways from icy patches and road closures. The UK has not seen temperatures of -14C since 1995 and forecasters are saying the drop will continue through to tonight.
