Conde Nast Traveler announced the results of its annual Reader’s Choice Awards on October 16. The Chewton Glen hotel in Hampshire trumped hotels in major cities like London, Edinburgh and Glasgow to win the Best Hotel in the British Isles accolade.

Two London hotels: the Milestone and the Goring came in second and third.

The Conde Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice awards rank the best hotels, islands, cities, cruise lines, airlines, car rental agencies and other sectors of the travel industry every year. The awards come in global and continent-based categories, as well as for some smaller regions.

The results are based on the magazine’s Reader’s Choice survey, which sees thousands of readers vote for their favourites every year. This year, the survey included 25,008 participants — an impressive figure — especially in the light of the global recession and the ensuing slowdown in global travel.

Editor-in-Chief for Conde Nast Traveler magazine, Klara Glowczewska says that the magazine’s readers remain passionate travellers despite the tough economic times, and are out there discovering diversity and experiences as much as ever.

London did not make it to the Top 3 Cities in Europe list. These spots were claimed by Florence, Rome and Venice in that order, a clear rout-out by Italy.

New York met a similar fate, edged out of the Top 3 US cities list by Santa Fe. San Francisco took the top spot — to no one’s surprise — followed by Charleston SC.

Ubud in Bali claimed the Top Asian city spot, followed by Bangkok and Hong Kong. Cape Town was voted Top city for Africa/Middle East.

The winners will all be featured in the November issue of the magazine, due to hit the stands tomorrow.
