All signs indicate that this summer will be a booming one for UK tourism, and millions of motorists will be heading off to their favourite holiday destinations. A new study has revealed some interesting details about motorist attitudes toward motorway service stations – including the finding that one in six said they’d like to have a “romantic liaison” at one of these roadside service areas and that one in 20 already have.

The study was conducted by Carrentals.co.uk, the leading car hire comparison site, in which approximately 2,300 UK motorists were questioned about their motorway service station experiences around the UK. While many complained about prices being too high, and cleanliness standards being too low, many were interested in the potential of the areas in terms of romantic interludes.

The managing director of Carrentals.co.uk, Gareth Robinson, commented: “This survey was designed to look at just what people think of motorway service stations, particularly the prices charged, and also the experiences they have had in them. The level of illicit romantic liaisons came as a complete surprise to us, but when you look at the most popular locations they all tend to be around the main travel routes through the country so service stations must make convenient, and secret, meeting places.”

The high cost of items sold at service stations was a major complaint by respondents to the survey. Sixty per cent said that prices should be reduced on items including CDs, souvenirs, medical items and sweets, as they were all over-priced.

Visitors to the Carrentals.co.uk site can compare deals offered by more than 35 rental car companies, such as Alamo, Holiday Autos, Sixt and Thrifty – at over 9,000 locations internationally.
