Car hire for bank holiday should be booked early

Bank holiday travellers are being warned by car hire comparison website CarRentals.co.uk that there will be rental rate increases and vehicle shortages at key destinations.

The online operator is already reporting vehicle shortages during August in Alicante and Malaga.

Commenting on the situation, the managing director of Carrentals.co.uk, Gareth Robinson, said: “Lack of car hire availability is proving to be a big problem for many travellers this summer. The car hire companies have scaled back in light of the credit crunch, but visitor numbers during peak periods have held up. It’s customers who are being let down, with some paying hundreds of pounds more for their car than they did a year ago.”

He added: “Travellers need to book early and look beyond the big brand names. We compare up to 50 rental companies on our site, meaning that if one supplier has sold out one of the smaller suppliers may still have some availability. It’s all about shopping around and booking in advance to avoid getting caught out.”

Some of the deals featured on the CarRentals.co.uk website include a week’s rental over the bank holiday in Orlando, Florida, from just £15 per day, in Crete, from £18 per day, from £23 per day in Malaga – and in Newquay from £17 per day in Newquay. The prices, which are subject to change, are based on one week’s rental, beginning 29 August.
