Brits looking for affordable escapes from summer rain
Posted on: July 31st, 2009 by Darren RobinsonIt now looks like Britain’s summer weather is a washout – and has been for some time despite the promising forecast by the Met Office. Many holidaymakers are now looking for a cheap overseas escape that won’t cost them a fortune.
The Met Office has made it official, indicating that its earlier prediction – made in April – was wrong, and that Britons are not going to be enjoying a “barbeque summer” after all. The revised forecast is for rain, followed by overcast skies and more rain.
What this means is a typical British summer, and one that would normally see holidaymakers fleeing the country in search of sunshine abroad.
This is not a normal year in other senses, however, as the recession has kept many from booking foreign holidays, option for a “staycation” instead. This is translating into rain-soaked breaks at UK holiday parks for many.
There is good news, however, in that the pound has seen some recovery against other currencies recently, up by 15 per cent in its exchange rate to the US dollar, and by 10 per cent in the rate to the euro and the Turkish lira.
With this expanded spending power and some careful searching, industry experts say that the cost of an overseas holiday this summer may not be prohibitive after all.
