Over the past year, the average price that Britons pay for a hotel room in Europe has increased by as much as 50 per cent, according to new research.

UK holidaymakers are being priced out of the eurozone by the weakness of the pound – which has fallen by 13 per cent against the euro in the last 12 months. In addition, online comparison site Trivago has shown in its monthly index of hotel prices that Britons are being quoted prices much higher than accounted for by the currency fluctuations.

When compared with May of 2008, the average monthly hotel room price has increased in Venice by £60, £54 in Geneva and in Nice by £47. Hotel room rates in Cannes, Frankfurt, Munich and Rome rose by approximately one-third during the same period.

Trivago’s index is based on over 40,000 inquiries for overnight stays made on a daily basis, and is considered to be one of the industry’s most comprehensive monitors of prices.

The price of an overnight stay in a double room in the 50 most popular cities in Europe now costs, on average, £107 this month – which is 15 per cent more than at this time last year.
