Posted on: December 4th, 2009 by Neill ZerkA woman who was convicted in 1993 in Thailand for possession of heroine has just been deported after trying to re-enter the country on holiday. The British national was sentenced to death in 1993 after being found with 86.9g of heroin on her person at the Bangkok Airport.
Sandra Gregory’s sentenced was reduced from death to 25 years’ in a Thai prison after she was caught at the airport with a heroin filled condom inside her body. Gregory served four and a half years of her sentence and was then deported to the UK to serve out the remainder of her sentence.
However, in 2000 the King of Thailand pardoned Gregory and she was released from her prison sentence which she was serving out in Kent. After being pardoned, Gregory went on to obtain her degree at Oxford and made fame when she wrote an autobiography detailing her experiences.
Yesterday, However, Gregory attempted to re-enter Thailand in Bangkok believing that she could come back to the country despite her drug conviction in 1993. She was stopped at the airport, however, and detained overnight. Upon being detained she contacted friends via text message detailing her situation.
Now it is believed that the Brit has been deported back to the UK, and was never allowed to enter Thailand.
Susan May, who advocates for victims of miscarriages of justice, said that Gregory had contacted her last night while being held at the Bangkok airport. Gregory also told May that she would not be allowed into the country, and it is now known that she has been deported back to the UK. May added that there had been a problem with Gregory’s visa.
