Britons are known for their moaning about the gloomy weather as well as their longing for summer weekends that are sunny and hot. It is said that they don’t take kindly to weather forecasters who fail to let them know about an upcoming brilliantly sunny summer day.
Earlier this week in the lovely seaside town of Bournemouth, 110 miles south-west of London, Britain’s weather service was the target of the local tourism chief’s fury. He insisted that the botched weather forecast for the holiday weekend kept visitors and their money away from the coastal resort.
The forecast for Bournemouth on Monday was for a gloomy start followed by rain in the afternoon. In fact, the day was far brighter, with sunshine and temperatures reaching about 23C – one of the best days this year, so far.
Mark Smith, Bournemouth’s tourism chief, complaining publicly about the weather forecast, saying that he believes it kept visitors away from the town. Rather than heading to the seaside for the May Bank Holiday weekend, they stayed at home instead, he asserted.
The tourism chief said that the gloomy forecast cost Bournemouth, which attracts visitors because of its seven-mile-long beach, millions of pounds in lost revenue.
