A recent international poll conducted by online market research company onepoll.com declared eight British cities as some of the friendliest tourist destinations in Europe, with two Scottish cities in the top 10.

While Northern Ireland’s cosmopolitan capital Dublin took the overall top spot, Edinburgh emerged as the most popular UK city, coming in second.

Eighteen thousand people from 16 countries across the world participated in the poll.

With UK and Ireland grabbing the top two spots, Holland’s capital Amsterdam came in at third position. British cities edged other European cities out of most of the other top 10 spots. Tourists voted Liverpool to the fourth spot, and Manchester took fifth place.

London trailed four other UK cities to settle at seventh place. Glasgow sat ahead of London at sixth place. Leeds, Birmingham and Brighton all made it into the top 15.

Paris, Barcelona and Rome were among the top 20, but usually popular cities like Madrid and Berlin found their way to the bottom of the list.

Onepoll.com declared Dublin a worthy winner. A spokesperson for the research company said the Irish city had something for everyone. The spokesperson praised the city’s helpful locals and described the bars in Dublin as “wonderful”. Dublin’s new urban centre was also singled out for praise, with its cobbled streets and hidden shops. Dublin’s upbeat bars, museums and castles attracts over four million foreign visitors annually, and the city is famous for its ‘Irish welcome’.

The poll surveyed travellers from America, Canada, France, UK and twelve other countries.
