British Airways is Worst with Luggage Problems
Posted on: June 8th, 2010 by Doug SmithA new survey by LV, an insurance company, has revealed that British travelers who fly with British Airways encounter the most issues with their luggage. The figures say that 1 in nearly 4 of the carrier’s passengers have experienced their baggage damaged, delayed or lost in the last 5 years.
However, the airline says that this is complete rubbish. A spokeswoman for British Airways said that there is no evidence to support that almost 25% of their customers have had delayed or lost luggage during the last 5 years. She added that their performance in terms of baggage has actually improved since Terminal 5 opened in 2008 at Heathrow Airport.
In a 2007 survey conducted by the Air Transport Users Council, it was found that the level of care British Airways shows baggage was low. Their figures meant the airline was the second worst in terms of baggage performance, which was only slightly better than TAP Air Portugal. However, the council now says that they can’t collect reliable figures since airlines are no longer required to give them out.
LV’s latest survey says that 2,007 passengers claim that Virgin Atlantic is the second worst airline for baggage handling performance, with 1 in about 8 passengers experiencing luggage issues. Third on the list was Emirates Airlines, with 1 in every 9 passengers claiming problems, which was followed by easyJet and then Ryanair. Overall, 29% of British air travelers are said to have experienced a baggage issue over the last 5 years, according to the survey.
This survey comes at a time when the airline industry is just starting to show signs of recuperating from the recession. Plus, British Airways is facing striking cabin crew in their 5th walkout. There could even be more industrial action taken throughout the summer.
