Bristol airport expansion plan would create jobs
Posted on: January 22nd, 2009 by Andrew BonesAs many as 4,000 new jobs could result if expansion plans for Bristol airport are approved, the airport’s operator claims.
Including in the plans are an extension to the passenger terminal, new aircraft stand and additional car parking spaces.
The airport operator said the existing site was large enough for more of the additions and noted that the work would see at least £340 million injected into the local economy.
Opponents to the expansion plan are calling the operator’s economic arguments “extremely weak.”
Hilary Burn, speaking on behalf of Stop Bristol Airport Expansion, said that the figures don’t stand up to scrutiny.
She added: “Expansion at any airport, whether it be Heathrow or Bristol, makes a mockery of the government’s green credentials as supposed leaders on climate change. We cannot keep growing airports and expect to make the massive cuts in carbon emissions that we need to safeguard our future.”
Robert Sinclair, the airport’s CEO, stressed that the additions would improve passenger service and expand the range of flights offered.
“It will also help us attract tourists directly into the region, supporting the local economy,” he noted.
With the expanded facilities, the airport would be able to increase annual passenger capacity from six to 10 million.
