Bmibaby announces new restructuring plans
Posted on: November 6th, 2009 by Andrew BonesUK’s low fare airline bmibaby announced its restructuring plans this week, which include the possibility of around 158 members of its staff being laid off.
Bmibaby announced that the number of aircrafts in its fleet would be reduced to 12 from 17. This also came with the announcement that 22 managerial and support positions were likely to be axed. Cabin crew at airports in Birmingham, Manchester and Cardiff are also facing the risk of redundancy.
Fifty four pilot and 82 cabin crew positions are reportedly planned to be cut.
However, restructuring plans made sure that more services would be available at East Midlands Airport in the upcoming year. Also, new positions would be created for pilots and cabin crew at this airport. The numbers given were 10 pilots and 15 cabin crew.
The aviation industry is one of the worst hit industries during this year’s recession and most carriers including bmibaby are experiencing record losses. Restructuring and contingency plans are the order of the day.
Bmibaby is one of the leading players in low cost airlines. The airline has said it will now focus on routes and services that involve the best interests of the airline. It assures customers of providing competitive rates and products, and will step up their efforts towards these goals. Core business areas will be worked on with more ardour.
Discussions with union representatives are now underway, to reduce redundancies wherever possible.
