Although the image of Blackpool as a seaside resort may have faded from its heyday, its airport has been voted the best in Britain.

In a recent survey involving 38 airports in the UK, the small Blackpool airport was praised for speedy check-in and security procedures, the ease of reaching boarding gates, the quality of its food vendors and the overall ambience of the terminal. Passengers, most of whom were flying to Mediterranean destinations, gave the airport a satisfaction score of 80 in the Which? Holiday poll.

It became clear from the results of the survey that passengers preferred less-congested airports, as two other smaller airports, London City and Robin Hood, came in second and third place, achieving scores of 78 and 76, respectively.

The UK’s largest airports, owned and operated by BAA, including Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, all received low satisfaction scores. Coming in with the lowest ranking was Heathrow’s Terminal 1, with Terminals 2, 3 and 4 also at the bottom of the list, along with both the north and south terminals at Gatwick.

Stansted was rated seventh from the bottom, just below Manchester, the UK’s fourth-largest airport, and Luton, the fifth-largest.
