Posted on: December 15th, 2009 by Andrew MayerThe region’s largest air terminal, Newcastle International Airport, has been awarded by the British Air Transport Association (BATA) as the best in the UK, beating off fellow finalists Cardiff and East Midlands.
The accolade came as Newcastle has been boosted by the announcement of additional international flight services.
Brussels Airlines has confirmed that it will increase the frequency of daily flight service it runs from Newcastle to Belgium’s capital city to three starting January next year. The new service provided by Brussels Airlines will also offer flight connections to holiday destinations such as Frankfurt, Istanbul, Munich, New York, Vienna and Warsaw.
The Belgian airline’s recent move is in response to the feedbacks received from some of the region’s biggest employers, including Komatsu and Procter and Gamble.
Peter Howe, Managing Director of Komatsu, stated that Brussels Airlines’ increase to three daily flights is beneficial to the company. The extra flight service will enhance Komatsu’s access to European markets and connectivity to Brussels, where its European main office is located.
Meanwhile, Procter and Gamble’s Head of the Global Business Service Centre, Eric Head, said that the added frequency of Newcastle flights is vital to ensure that its North East offices can easily connect with its colleagues worldwide.
In other related news, the budget carrier Flybe has informed that it is introducing a new route from Newcastle to Hanover in March. In addition, the Managing Director of Thomas Cook Airlines, Frank Pullman, also revealed that the airline will add two new flights to Izmir and Burgas for next year’s summer season.
