Advertising executive Oliver Beale was revealed to be the author of a customer complaint letter sent to Virgin Atlantic. The letter is being called the best complaint letter ever written.

Twenty-nine-year old Beale, was so annoyed over his meal on the airline during a flight to London from Mumbai that he sent a six-page letter, with photos of the food, to Sir Richard Branson, the head of Virgin Atlantic.

The lengthy rant included Beale’s description of what he called a “culinary journey of hell” has been emailed around the world and become a sensation on the Internet.

At one point in the letter he appealed to Sir Richard to remember how exciting it was to open Christmas gifts when he was a child. He continued: “It’s your hamster Richard. It’s your hamster in the box and it’s not breathing. That’s how I felt when I peeled back the foil.”

Beale is the art director at WCRS, an award-winning advertising agency based in London. He rejected suggestions that his letter was an advertising stunt, insisting that it was a real complaint about the meal he was served.

Sir Richard telephoned him to apologise for his experience on the airline, and invited Beale to select food and wines served on future Virgin Atlantic flights.

Beale commented: “He was incredibly nice about the whole thing but I haven’t received any compensation since talking to him.”
