The Air Transport Association of America in the United States has announced its projections for the summer travel season on the North American continent. The Forecast released by the ATA says that this year will see slightly fewer passengers taking to the skies than in previous years, with the summer season defined as starting June 1st and ending August 31st. The drop is no more than one percent, and James C. May, chief executive and president of the ATA says, “For a variety of reasons, slightly fewer people will fly this summer and planes will be approaching 85 percent full. While New York remains a chokepoint, airlines, airports and government are doing all they can to avoid lengthy delays when possible and to provide a pleasant travel experience for all.”

Though the reduction of passengers is only one percent, the drop is being caused by the rising price of air tickets due to the oil surge and the weakening of the American economy. Despite the drop in passengers, planes are still expected to fly at an 85 percent capacity.
