A fight broke out in a beach district in Puerto Rico this weekend, and in the mélée an American tourist from California was killed. 37-year old Eddie Maco Campbells of Oakland was shot three times- in the chest, shoulder and head and died afterwards while receiving medical care according to on-duty officer Roberto Ramos.

The bar where the fight took place is called The Vibe, and is located in Isla Verde, an area popular with tourists for its many hotels, bars, clubs and casinos. In a statement to local media police said they weren’t sure what exactly had caused the argument, but that an investigation was underway. Officer Amarilis Calderon said, “The owner asked them to leave the establishment, and when they were outside an individual approached and shot Campbells.”

During the fracas two of Campbells’ friends were also injured, but neither were wounded by gunshots. This incident marks a rare occasion tourists are affected by violence in the US Caribbean territory, where over 700 homicides were recorded last year.
