American Airlines has launched a new mobile inflight broadband service on a number of its domestic services. The facility is called Gogo and is provided by Aircell.

The mobile network will be available for passenger use on flights from New York to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Miami.

American Airlines, the largest air carrier in the world, has stated that its inflight broadband service is the first full mobile platform launched by any airline for the US domestic market.

Dan Garton, who is American’s executive vice president for marketing, stated: “We are pleased to provide our customers with the unprecedented ability to stay connected to their family, friends and business associates on the ground via the internet while traveling at 30,000 feet above the United States.

“With today’s launch, American Airlines makes history as the first and only US airline to offer customers full inflight internet connectivity, demonstrating once again our industry leadership and focus on our customers.”

The Aircell system actually turns the airplane into a WiFi hotspot, which means that passengers can check email, send instant messages and visit their favorite websites.

Passengers can use their smartphones or personal digital assistants to connect with the Internet, and also access numerous applications, such as Just the Flight Mobile, for example.
