Airlines call for regulatory overhaul
Posted on: March 12th, 2008 by Dave BessThe United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority announcement that says price rises at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick international airports are on the way has prompted four of the largest airlines operating in the UK to take action.
RyanAir, easyJet, bmi and Virgin Atlantic have spoken as one voice to call for a total overhaul of the regulation systems of the country’s biggest airport, saying that this recent OK for price increases exposes the band-aid solution applied to a system that is fundamentally flawed.
The airlines say that it’s the customer that will suffer, and after some airports have already implemented price increases, the new round of hikes is seen as unacceptable, especially when Gatwick and Heathrow say their prices could rise by 50 to 86% respectively.
The airlines make it clear that just because these price increases are less than BAA had originally quoted is no cause to be thankful or celebrate. This shows that the system is outdated and not functioning properly, and it is hoped tat more airlines will stand up against the airport authorities and the BAA to create a sustainable solution for the future.
