Landing this past Monday during heavy rains, an Adam Air jet sided off the runway at Hang Nadim Airport on Batam Island, Indonesia, causing injury to five passengers on board. The hydraulic system and the right wing of the Boeing 737-400 were damaged as the aircraft skidded over 245 feet into the grass beside the runway at Hang Nadim International. The plane was arriving from Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, carrying 176 passengers, of which five were hospitalized for head and neck trauma.

Though what actually went wrong and caused Monday’s accident is still unclear, this is not good press for Adam Air, who has experienced three similar incidents in less than a year; nor is it good for Indonesia in general, whose carriers have been banned from flying to Europe over safety issues.

The timing was bad- with the European Union reviewing the case against Indonesian airlines and whether or not to allow flights to Europe. This most recent accident has put an end to that for now, as well as the United States Federal Aviation Administration placing Indonesia’ rating for air safety to the lowest possible category.
