A smashing good time

On Tuesday, a group of 30 people whom a team of psychologists deemed to be ‘highly stressed out’ took hammers and battering rams to a hotel in Spain and partially demolished the building.

The people had been carefully selected and were there on the hotel’s invitation, taking advantage of planned hotel renovations in order to indulge in some slightly bizarre stress-relief therapy.

The select crew were decked out in protective gear including dust masks, eye protection, overalls, helmets and gloves and equipped with hammers. They rampaged through the hotel, breaking televisions sets, smashing walls apart and throwing furniture around with utter abandon.

The NH Alcalca Hotel, which is one of 335 hotels in a chain that spans three continents decided to provide the stree-relieving therapy as a way of beginning teir renovations and generating publicity.

A statement released by the hotel said, “Who hasn’t dreamed, in the middle of a stress attack, of breaking everything around them?”

One psychologist strongly supported the event saying that “After a few blows comes exhaustion and with it the release of pain-relieving endorphins which make us feel much better.”

When the hotel reopens in September, those who helped with the demolition will be invited back to tour the new facilities.
