A few tips for smooth sailing in the big apple
Posted on: June 8th, 2007 by Neill ZerkNew York has a reputation like few other cities have. Often referred to as the world’s greatest metropolis, it peaks the curiosity of millions of people and becomes a travel destination for a good number of those millions.
There is so much to see in this town you may feel overwhelmed. The hustle and the bustle can be overwhelming, but don’t freezes up, there are a few things that if kept in mind, will assure your stay in the Big Apple will pass without incident. Hopefully.
As in any of the world’s great capitals, the place is crowded. Tourists gawk around while locals attempt to go about their regular business. Keeping mindful of causing congestion is very important in a city like New York.
For example: when you’re walking down a street and suddenly feel the need to consult your map, stopping in the middle of the sidewalk is never a good idea.
When you’re in the waves of people getting on the subway, make sure you have your metrocard unholstered and ready to swipe when you arrive at the gate. No one wants a dam in this people-river.
When you’re on an escalator and you’re not moving, keep to the right so others can pass you if they wish; this is not a good place for public displays of affection where two bodies occupy the entire space of the escalator.
With these small but important things in mind, you should be able to avoid any of that trademark temper New Yorkers can be known for.

That’s true for any large city. I have to add my own tip also. It’s typical ettiquete in Toronot (although too often forgotten) and i don’t know if it applies elsewhere, but when youare on the escalator, stand left and walk right! If you want to dawdle, that’s fine, but let people who are in a rush get through!

I don’t know, if the New Yorkers want to be so snotty, I’ve got better places to be, personally.
