Five British women in their teens and twenties were killed in Ecuador yesterday when their tour bus was hit by a truck. 15 other people aboard were also injured. The girls were on a four-month exchange program for language and volunteerism when their bus was hit by a truck carrying sand near the coastal city of Puerto Lopez near the capital city of Quito. Aside from the 5 people killed in the crash, a local tour guide, a French national and 12 other Britons were treated for injuries sustained in the hit and run accident, as the truck driver fled the accident site.

Those injured are out of danger according to Jorge Cedeno, a doctor responsible for treating the patients. Injuries included cuts and bruises, concussions and some broken bones. The tour operator that arranged the trip, Mark Davison sympathized with the families saying “A parent should never have to go through this. My heart absolutely goes out to them.”
