Paris’ second airport after Charles De Gaulle International is set to receive a hefty make over to accommodate its rising number of passengers. The south terminal will increase its capacity by 10% and this should push the yearly number of passengers to 12 million people.

Paris-Orly is the tenth busiest airport in Europe, and checked through over 9.5 million passengers in 2006. Patrice Hardel, the managing director for Paris-Orly states: “For summer departures, we offer our international passengers departing from South Terminal a series of new developments to make their airport experience easier: a single space regrouping all the departures checks, a very large boarding concourse of 7,000 sqm, a new business lounge. And for arriving passengers, a large baggage delivery area of 5,600 sqm. In a few months we will unveil the new service and duty-free area which will triple the surface.”

One of the new upgrades will greatly ease security checkpoints, and it is expected that 1800 to 2000 people can be processed per hour, whereas before it was only 1500.

The baggage area will double in size to make the overall process faster than before. The project will be undertaken by Aéroports de Paris, who also develops Paris’ other airports, Charles De Gaulle and Paris-Le Bourget.
