If you are making your rounds of all the museums in the Bedford area and you are interested in aeronautical displays, then you can go to the Shuttleworth Collection in Biggleswade. This museum is just some 25 minutes away from the Bedford Museum.
The home of the world famous and historic Edwardian flying machines, the Shuttleworth Collection also showcases a unique exhibition that depicts the first 100 years of flight. Although the collection was not made available to the public until the year 1963, it is known to have grown in number since then. The regular air displays of the museum are also a crowd-favorite among visitors from all corners of the globe.
During the season, all the aircrafts in the museum, that are still airworthy, are flown in displays along with visiting aircrafts from other services and from other operators. It is during these aerial displays that the Edwardian flying is recreated, among others performed in different periods in history. Modern aircrafts that serve to provide a contrast with the vintage aircrafts are also included in the displays.
Presently, the Shuttleworth Collection is housed in eight hangars. These include the workshop hangar and a garage where the Clayton and Shuttleworth steam traction engine are displayed alongside motorcycles and cars. Horse-drawn carriages are also featured in a separate coach room
