St Nicola’s Festival & Public Holiday

Every 6th of November

During the 6th of December in 1991, the city of Dubrovnik lost many of its residents to the Croatian Homeland War. During this time, a large part of the city of Dubrovnik was heavily devastated by the aggression of the Serbs and the Montenegros. In fact, during the war, several of the landmarks of Dubrovnik were damaged, including the famous Placa of Dubrovnik. However, what is even worse than the damage to builds, streets, and other physical monuments, is that many lives were lost.

After the end of the war, the city of Dubrovnik was able to rebuild its damaged structures. However, there was no way to bring back the lives that were lost, and all that the city could do was to mourn those who perished during the war and remember them forever.

Every 6th of November, Dubrovnik celebrates the St Nicole’s Festival. This day is dedicated to the remembrance of those who lost their lives during the Croatian Homeland War. The city also remembers those who were wounded during the war as well as those who lost their loved ones. The brave men and women who fought to defend the city against the aggressors are also remembered on this day. Attending the St Nicola’s Festival is an important piece of this city’s culture and history.

The city of Dubrovnik also has a memorial room at the Sponza Palace. In this room, there are many exhibits that pertain to the Croatian Homeland War. These exhibits include biographies, pictures and multimedia exhibits about the role of the city of Dubrovnik during the Croatian Homeland War.
