The Musee d’Orsay, located on the west bank of the Seine River, was originally a railway station which was then called the Gare d’Orsay. It was converted into a museum in the mid 1970s because the platforms were too short for the newer, longer trains which then became standard length at that time. The conversion started from 1977 with on adding a bigger floor space of 200 square meters in addition to the original area and expanding it to four distinct floors. In 1986, the Musee d’Orsay was opened.
This world famous museum houses both traditional and contemporary art forms. It is dominated by French works in painting, sculpture and graphic art from the 19th and the 20th century. Famous works by world renowned artists such as Renoir, Van Gogh and Monet are housed in the museum. Some of the contemporary pieces particularly the genres of photography, architecture and furniture re also exhibited here. Aside from the art exhibits, the museum holds lectures and symposia for further learning, but they only conduct these in French.
Musical concerts, film showings and thematic exhibitions are also organized throughout the year. One of the attractions that can be seen on the building are the huge clocks which were originally part of the old train station. One is mounted on the façade of the building facing the river and one is in the entrance hall.
