Taxis in Stockholm

In Stockholm, there is reliable taxi service all over. It is easier than ever to find a taxi, either by calling on the phone and ordering one, getting one from a taxi stand a busy part of town, or flagging one down in the street (the lit white light on top of the cab means it is available).
If it is a registered or authorized taxi, it will have a yellow license plate with a little “T” at the end of it. The biggest taxi company in Stockholm is called Taxi Stockholm; others are Taxi Kurir, Taxi 020, and Top Cab. They are major companies and generally will price the ride fairly.
Note that there are other taxi services that are not registered or authorized. They are considered “black” or “gypsy” cabs (“svarttaxi”, which means “black taxi”), and they don’t follow the rules that the registered companies play by. It is generally smarter to stick to the registered or authorized cabs, especially for safety. While the black taxi will charge you about the same as a regular taxi, don’t expect a receipt. These are usually considered controlled by organized crime. Travel in one at your own risk.
You can sometimes negotiate the price with a licensed taxi driver before you get into the cab. It is just “understood” that you won’t get a receipt, and the money will be going into the driver’s pocket and not to the company or to pay the taxes. You can get a better price doing this, but if you don’t know what the usual metered price is, you might actually lose money doing this. Beware!
If you choose to tip, it is encouraged and is generally about 10% of the fare. All the major taxi companies take the usual credit cards in payment.
