Stockholm-Arlanda Airport

Stockholm-Arlanda Airport is the major largest airport in Sweden and the third largest airport in all the Nordic countries. It also serves as one of three major hubs for Scandinavian Airlines System.
This airport was built in the late 1950’s, but until 1960 it was only used for practice flights. In 1960 it was open to the general public, and in 1962 they held the official opening ceremony. The name Arlanda comes from Arland, which is an old name for the parish of Ärlinghundra (which is now Husby-Ärlinghundra in Märsta) where the airport is located. The “a” at the end was added to go with other Swedish names that end with and ending of -landa. This also creates a pun of the name, using the Swedish verb “landa”, which means “to land.”
The Arlanda Airport can handle about 25 millions passengers a year.
The airport has four terminals, with a total of 64 gates. Terminals 3 and 4 are for domestic flights, Terminals 2 and 5 are for international. Terminals 4 and 5 have a shopping centre (Sky City) between them. There is the Arlanda Express train that connects the airport with Stockholm.
The airport has three runways. The administration at the airport claims to be the world leader at clearing snow from runways. They have a policy to never close the airport due to snowfall – but during a heavy snowfall there can be long delays!
Arlanda is one of the emergency landing sites for NASA’s Space Shuttle, most likely on account of its relatively long main runway.
