Mini Guide to Sweden
Sweden is the true essence of the term “Scandinavian.” It has gained global recognition through famous brand names like Volvo, ABBA and Ikea. Fluctuating currency exchange rates have made Sweden nearly affordable for visitors to experience a country brimming with natural beauty, enjoyable cities, and the familiar liberalism of Sweden.
Unexpectedly relaxed and modestly sized as far as capitals go, Stockholm is a medieval city occupying several little islands, giving it a very photographic presence. Its old town is the 13th century Gamla Stan, a whimsical place of stairways, lanes and arches. The Royal palace of the 18th century is a major draw, and the Vasamuseet is an amazing feat in marine archaeology, exposing Stockholm’s maritime heritage. The Djurgården boasts gorgeous parklands and a generous inventory of nice museums, particularly the intriguing open-air museum of Skansen. Lively nightlife can be enjoyed in the suburban Kungsgatan.
Lovely Vadstena is one of Sweden’s most pleasing towns, enjoying its place along Lake Vättern. The Renaissance-era Vadstena castle is lakefront and harbourfront. The impressions of Gothic and Rennaissance can be detected in the attractive klosterkyrkan (abbey) and its lavish interior of sculpture and art of the period. Also impressive is the former convent and royal home — Bjälboättens palats.
Gothenburg is more industrial but equally as pleasant, with its amazing harbour, vivacious environment, numerous museums, and the well-liked Liseberg amusement park. Museums that impress are Sjöfartshistoriska museet, Konstmuseet, and Ostindiska huset.
