Weather in Australia

Australia is at the opposite side of the world to Europe so the seasons are reversed. The Australian summer starts in December with the autumn beginning in March. The winter starts in June and the spring in September. The four seasons are however quite moderate and temperatures do not vary very much. In the outback the temperatures can be extreme with below freezing temperatures at night and boiling daytime heat.

The wettest part is in the north and the area has a higher humidity during the summer than the southern parts. Australia does have a monsoon which occurs in the Darwin area where flooding is not uncommon.

The best time to visit the south of the country is in spring and autumn when the climate is pleasantly mild. In high summer it can become very uncomfortable and full protection from the sun is essential. Springtime also produces some wonderful displays of wild flowers.

The north is extremely humid in the summer but the bonus is the wonderfully lush green landscape. It cools off up north from June through to August so this a good time to visit Queensland. There is skiing in New South Wales and Victoria during the winter months.
