If you are traveling to Stockholm by train, either domestically or internationally, you will arrive at the Central Station. Constructed in 1871, the Central Station is the country’s largest commercial rail depot. The station includes 19 platforms and over 200,000 people pass through the station each day, making it among the busiest in Scandinavia.

The train station is connected to Stockholm’s T-bana metro system, making for easy, hassle-free transfers to and from the public transit network. As a word of caution, do not expect to be able to travel to small towns in Sweden by train from this station, as only larger urban centers are served. For small, rural destinations, the intercity bus offers a better alternative.

Tickets for all trains departing from the Central Station can be reserved on-location, as well as by calling SJ, Sweden’s national rail company, or online through the SJ website. Additionally, it usually is also possible to purchase tickets for most destinations from vending machines located at the station. You can obtain ticket and other travel information at the station each day, from 6:00 to 23:00.

Swedish trains are generally modern and comfortable. For those who would like a quiet, more relaxing trip, the rail company offers mobile (cell phone) free cars on most routes. In order to take advantage of this option, a booking must be made ahead of time.
