The safari exhibit includes many different types animals from all around the world. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is found 1KM south of the Old part. If you take a steep climb to where the cathedral is you will find an absolutely beautiful view of the suburbs of Marseille that is definitely worth the hike.
The church is one of the main local landmarks and was designed by the architect Jacques Henri Esperandieu. Atop of the building sits a large statue of the Virgin and Child that can be seen from most of the city. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde began construction in 1853 and was finished in 1864.
The church has about 1.5 million visitors per year. The local stadium is the Stade Vélodrome which hosts the local football games and has seating for over 60 000 people. The record attendance for a local game was 58,897 people in 2004 for a UEFA Cup semi-final game played against Newcastle United FC. The stadium will be used for the 2007 Rugby World Cup in the future.
