The London Luton Airport is the closest airport there is to Bedford and is just some 41 minutes away. One of the fastest growing airports in UK, the Luton Airport serviced more than 9.4 million passengers in 2006, which represent almost a 400 percent increase compared to ten years ago. In 2007, some 9.94 million passengers used the services of the airport, with 93 percent using scheduled flights and seven percent going for charter flights. Eighty-five percent of these passengers were aboard international flights and 15 percent were covered by domestic flights.
Officially starting as the Luton Municipal Airport in July 16, 1938, the Luton Airport is regarded as the northern airport terminal for London. Although managed, operated and developed by a private company, the airport is owned by the Luton Borough Council. As such, there are many facilities in the airport’s terminal for the convenience of passengers.
Having passed through security in the departure lounge, you will be free to buy anything you like in the many shops and eating establishments in the terminal. For possible souvenirs, there are a number of shops in the airport that sell everything, from clothing, fragrance, confectionery, to wines and other spirits. For meals or snacks, there is also a fast food restaurant, a cafe and a full menu restaurant in the terminal that can address your needs.
