Sorry to jump on the bandwagon but I was kinda disappointed by this list of "Off the beaten track" places. All of these places are really well known. I'm not an amazing expert so I'm not going to be able to suggest alternatives that are THAT off the beaten path either but I was expecting something like:

If you like Austria and Switzerland why not try Slovenia? If you like the Mediterranean coast why not try Montenegro or Albania? If you want to experience a little Scandanavian-style Europe take a visit to Estonia. Etc.... Calling Salzburg and Strasbourg "off the beaten track" is somewhat laughable. They're HUGELY touristed towns.

Dude. To consider Salzburg or Straßburg off the beaten Path...
@zach:
"most tourists" means "one week for good ol' europe"-Americans and "10 countries in 11 days" Japanese, right?

I think these are great cities that one should visit. As most tourists would simply hit the main cities like Paris, London and Rome. Its good to remind people of other cities.

As for Elliot above...if there really is an elliot koch who is very well travelled, you sir posting are not it....not with an absurd post like that attacking this post. as well there are depending on your source 189-195 countries in the world so where exactly did you pull 280 from?

Indeed, not at all off the beaten path, especially for someone born in Europe and who has been to Geography classes lol :) Want off the beaten path? Try Szeged in Hungary, although it's right smack near the highway or better yet Bran in Romania (although all Dracula lovers would know abt it)...my point? try smaller towns if you want "off the beaten path" stuff ;) oh yeah, here's an idea: Moneasa in Arad county in Romania, quite close to the Hungarian border :) and it happens to be a mountains resort...eh?

Strasbourg ist near Paris? As far as I remenber (and google-maps is of the same opinion) these 2 cities are almost 500km apart.
If thats near Paris, than 3/4 of France, some part of southern England and complete Belgium and Luxembourg are near Paris.

Great places and I've been to them all. Here are a few more interesting places:
Ulm, Germany (A. Einstein's birthplace and EU's tallest cathedral)
Brugges, Belgium
Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy (in the Alps)
Anticoli Corrado, Italy ( 30 miles outside of Rome; where they filmed The Secret of Santa Vittoria)
Malmesbury in Wiltshire, UK (The history of Malmesbury can be traced over 1,100 years. It is England's oldest borough and is dominated by the remains of a 12th century Benedictine abbey.)
Fucking, Austria (just to have been there and photograaphed the village sings is an experience. 32 km northwest of Salzburg)
Aachen, Germany
I've been to all of them, more than once, and would love to go back.

Hi Elliot,

Welcome to the site! I'm pleased we've got such a well seasoned traveller visiting. Wow - you've been around a lot. Why don't you list what you'd think are off the beaten track, or better than that, would you like to write a guest blog about some of the places you've visited?

Thanks

Gareth
