The Christmas spirit was in full flow. I had eaten a third-world chocolate from my advent calendar. The tree, manufactured from the finest toxic plastics, was up and decorated with shiny baubles, and Jimmy Stewart was blubbing again on the TV (It's a Wonderful Life is a strange symptom of the modern day Christmas experience; suicide with a fat angel, very Christmasy).

Planning a great winter break can take a tremendous amount of effort. Firstly you have to find a place that everyone in the family wants to visit. Before we begin dissecting your last holiday let’s talk about what a carbon footprint really is. The concept of a carbon footprint is pretty straight forward. It is simply the impact that you have on the planet in terms of greenhouse gases emitted. Greenhouse gases are commonly carbon dioxide, but can be things like methane and nitrous oxide as well.
This is a footprint, but it's not carbon.
